Chapter 11
The Ravens
Lily felt sick, defeated. She felt as though every ounce of joy had been stripped from her being. How could this have happened? She rubbed her sister's ring in her fingers, a gentle reminder of just how serious the situation was. What now? Focusing her mind on the task at hand, she closed her eyes and thought hard, rubbing her eyes. 'The raven!' She had to trap it somehow. She would have to get some help from one of the better trappers in the village on how to trap a bird. But this was Margurite ... she would be smarter than your average raven. She would need a different kind of 'bait'. But what? She headed back to the village, a task she dreaded. Perhaps Mitch was so out of touch with reality, he wouldn't remember last night, or else just think it was Snow he'd been with. Come to think of it, she couldn't remember where she'd put her scarf. She would have to get another one. For as much as she hated to admit it, Maci was right about one thing ... she looked too much like Snow with her hair the way it was. As she approached the village, she stopped. Truth was, she still wasn't ready to face everything ... Thomas, Mitch, even reality itself. Lily's head swam with her thoughts. Before last night, she truly was considering staying here in the Willows with Thomas, her true love. But after what happened last night, Lily knew it wasn't possible. She had to go back to her betrothed ... she had to get away from Mitch ... and worst of all, she had to tell Thomas ... everything.
Their eyes met as he came around the corner. She smiled, a fake one almost, in knowing what she must do. âThomas, I need to talk to you, but not here. Somewhere we can be alone.â
âAlright.â He smiled sweetly, as he loved the chance to be alone with Lily, no matter what she would say.
He led Lily away from the village and into a clearing in the woods. Gently, they sat down on a fallen tree trunk.
After a moment's pause, Thomas offered softly, "I'm sorry I was pulled away last night. Nugget had a baby girl, and they are both doing fine."
Lily smiled slightly. Her mind was too occupied with what she knew she must do. "Thomas ..."
He took her face in his hands and smiled. "Lily, I have to tell you this, and please hear me out. I know you feel an obligation to your kingdom in marrying this prince. But I wanted to tell you that I love you so much, Lily. I want you to stay here with me. But you know that already. So, if you feel such an obligation to your crown back home, then maybe there is another way. Maybe I could come back with you to the kingdom and be one of these ânoblesâ you can be betrothed to. Then you can marry me instead.
